I hope you will forgive me if I take a moment to catch my breath. November was a stellar month at the cinema. Four massive releases, each of which in their own way not only entertained us royally but which will live long in the memory. Gladiator 2 was epic, Moana 2 was fun, Conclave was thrilling and Wicked was, well, wicked! My favourite film of the year – so far.
I say that because we still have a few more weeks to go, so let’s round up for you what’s coming out in December. To be honest, the list of films isn’t quite so exciting, but there will probably be something for everyone.
Grand Theft Hamlet is an unusual documentary about two out-of-work actors attempting to stage a production of the Bard’s great play in the virtual world of Grand Theft Auto. Intriguing. Rumours – and trust me on this, because I got to see it at a press screening earlier this year – are it is weird. The leaders of the G7 meet in Germany only to find they are facing the end of the world – and a giant brain sitting in a garden. I kid you not. It’s a wacky sci-fi/fantasy that I actually really enjoyed.
The classic Spiderman baddie, Kraven the Hunter, gets his only movie this month – but the BIG release in December sees a return to Middle Earth. Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is out on December 13. Set 200 years before Frodo’s time, this animated film looks set to thrill and satisfy fans of J R R Tolkien. And the rest as well.
Disney unleash their latest live-action movie based on an animated classic on December 20th: Mufasa: The Lion King. The last live-action Lion King flopped – because it was terrible, so we wait to see. Sonic The Hedgehog is back just after Christmas. Finally, look out for Better Man – the story of Robbie Williams told in a very unusual way. Looks good.
Actually – December might not be so bad after all. Happy cinema trips, folks.
