I’m pleased to announce that Ali Hull has agreed to join the Sorted Digital (SD) talent pool. It’s a real privilege for me to welcome someone of Ali’s calibre into the SD fold. She brings a wealth of publishing experience and is an accomplished journalist and professional editor of some note. Ali has worked for the Keswick Convention, Spring Harvest, Authentic Media, Lion Hudson, and the Jubilee campaign. She has edited various publications, including Ethos magazine, the Christian Democrat, and Preach magazine.
Ali is very familiar with the ethos and inner workings of Sorted Magazine having been deputy editor of the print magazine from 2019 to 2021. Ali explained: “I became Sorted’s Book Editor in 2017, and given the remit to review whatever I thought would be of interest to me and the readers. I was as happy as an alcoholic with a wine column and plenty of free samples, and then Steve Legg followed that up by asking me to join the team as sub-editor in 2019.
Ali was involved with Sorted between 2017 and 2021
“Sorted was a great publication to work on: Steve was open to anything that interested men and spread the gospel at the same time, which gave me great freedom. The magazine appealed to those who were interested in hairy-chested pursuits, and we would always have an account of an adventure, maybe trekking across Africa or sailing the seven seas. Sportsmen would be interviewed about their time on and off the pitch, and famous actors would talk about their lives on and off set.
“But we also looked at more difficult issues: racism in the Metropolitan police and the pressures being put on the force generally. We interviewed the less famous as well, and leavened the serious stuff with reviews of cars, and adverts for silly shirts, the Steve Legg trademark. For me, the most memorable interview I ever did was in the middle of the first Covid lockdown, when I talked to mountaineer Richard Tiplady about his fall, in March 2020, when the debris of an earlier avalanche stopped his 800-foot slide down Pillar, in the Lake District, and stopped him going over a precipice. Steve’s insistence on good design and great photos meant this account, like everything else, was properly presented and illustrated.
“Steve was also meticulous about the little things – grammar and punctuation mattered to him, there was never a ‘That’ll do’ attitude. And he always paid me as soon as I sent an invoice – he believed in being trustworthy in small as well as large things.”
The more I’ve got to know Ali, it’s become apparent that her connections and knowledge of the world of publishing are quite extensive. Her understanding about the vast amount of work involved in producing and publishing a magazine, online or otherwise, is well grounded in the real world. I’ve really valued those moments when I’ve wobbled a bit, turned to her for editorial advice, and she has so generously shared her no nonsense wisdom and experience with great kindness and compassion. It’s been empowering for me to engage with another professional who understands the value of the Sorted vision.
Initially Ali will review books for Sorted Digital. However, we are hatching plans for her to conduct interviews and write feature articles, as she has done this for Sorted with considerable flare in the past!
